The new band, Supernova, formed by drummer Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe) with bassist Jason Newsted (Metallica) and guitarist Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses)

New lead singer to be chosen from 16 hopefuls when the second edition of CBS’s Rock Star returns summer 2006.

New album to be produced by Butch Walker (Rolling Stone Magazine’s 2005 “Hot Producer Of The Year”).

CBS and Mark Burnett Productions announced today that legendary musicians from some of the biggest American rock bands have joined forces to form a new band, Supernova, and will use CBS’s Rock Star as the competition to determine the new lead singer.
Supernova will feature drummer Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses). The second edition of CBS’s Rock Star will premiere on the network this summer.

After the winning singer is selected on CBS’s Rock Star, Supernova will record an original album, to be co-written and produced by Butch Walker (hit songwriter/producer for Avril Lavigne, Pink) that will be released in the fall before the band embarks on a world tour starting in early 2007.

“I’ve toured with both Gilby and Jason. They’re incredible musicians and I’ve always wanted to play with them,” said Tommy Lee. “Starting a new band with old friends on worldwide television is going to be a blast, and we’re going to pull out all the stops to find the most charismatic and musically talented lead singer to front Supernova. I love breaking the rules.”

Bassist Jason Newsted added, “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to play with guys I’ve respected for a long time. It gives us a chance to be innovators. This is a new thing. It’s never been done before. We’re going to break new ground musically and on television. The anticipation is building in me Lead guitarist and co-writer Gilby Clarke proclaimed, “Rock n’ Roll is so alive and I’m so excited to be a part of CBS’s Rock Star. This is television history. Where else can you raid three historic bands to form one great band? I can’t wait for the summer to begin.”

Butch Walker will join the project as co-writer and producer of the new album. Working with the dudes from Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, and Metallica sounds like nothing but trouble, so I’m in! I’m looking forward to whoever the new lead singer is going to be so the guys can start corrupting their mind..!”

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts, with Burke returning to the stage for introductions and Navarro returning to the judges’ couch for input and evaluations. “Last year, doing Rock Star: INXS was the greatest summer job of my life,” Navarro affirmed. “This year, I’m on the couch with my friends Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke and Jason Newsted as they choose Supernova’s lead singer.”

This summer’s edition of CBS’s Rock Star will also feature some format twists with a different music celebrity or rock legend each week. Said Navarro, “Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go.”

In the first season of CBS’s Rock Star, rock sensation INXS found their new lead singer in Canadian heartthrob J.D. Fortune. Since the show, INXS has taken to the studio and the road, releasing their massive hit single “Pretty Vegas” and selling out every concert in their North American tour. Their new CD, “Switch,” debuted in the Billboard Top 20, and is currently going gold and platinum in countries around the world.

“Millions dream of becoming a rock star…our show actually makes that happen,” said Mark Burnett, creator and executive producer of CBS’s Rock Star. “The winner of CBS’s Rock Star will not only play in huge stadiums before sold out crowds, they will do it alongside legendary musicians from three of America’s biggest, all-time rock bands who have sold a combined total of a quarter of a billion albums: Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica. Fronting Supernova is the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll dream and it’s about to come true.”

Tommy Lee rose to stardom as a founding member of Mötley Crüe. One of the most successful rock bands in history, Mötley Crüe has sold over 40 million albums while also becoming the poster boys of rock star decadence. Most recently, Lee released his third solo album, Tommyland: The Ride, and announced a documentary project with award-winning filmmaker Bruce Sinofsky. His candid 2004 memoir, Tommyland, landed on The New York Times best-seller list.

Jason Newsted is a six-time Grammy winner and was a longtime member of the legendary band Metallica, one of the most successful musical acts of all time (100 million albums sold worldwide). After his departure from Metallica, Newsted created the band EchoBrain and, in 2003, he began touring with Ozzy Osbourne while also playing bass for the iconic techno-thrash band, Voivod.

Gilby Clarke was the guitarist for the iconic rock band, Guns N’ Roses (90 million albums sold), traveling on their legendary and infamous three-year “Use Your Illusion” world tour. He also worked with Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Jeff Beck, MC5 and on the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert. He was a recipient of the MTV Video Vanguard Award.

Butch Walker is best known as the songwriter, musician and producer behind hit songs for Avril Lavigne, Pink, Bowling for Soup and for Tommy Lee’s recent solo album, Tommyland: The Ride. His song “My Happy Ending” went to Number One for Avril Lavigne and was the key track in her nine-time platinum album “Under My Skin,” leading to him being named by Rolling Stone magazine as “Hot Producer of the Year” in 2005. Pink’s new album, “I’m Not Dead,” features two Butch Walker compositions.

CBS’s Rock Star is produced by Mark Burnett Productions. Mark Burnett, David Goffin, Lisa Hennessy, Dave Navarro, Tommy Lee and Carl Stubner are executive producers. Conrad Riggs and Eden Gaha are co-executive producers.

I watched the show for the firsat time last night. Oh my god why didn’t they get rid of the dark harired girl. I don’t see this girl ever….ever……being the “frontman” for their band. Talent……she has none…zero….zip. And Navarro is he just there for what ???? Cool show though overall. Looking forward to watching more episodes.

didn’t mean to put down anyone…….too bad the guy from American Idol Chris D. couldn’t be on this show. I think he would be perfect. But still can’t get over that talent-less girl from last night. I’m sure there is a venue out there for her but ……please don’t torture us guys…….vote her off next time……….

  7. Comment from Eddie on July 14th, 2006 :

I think these rockers just have a hard time ditching the hot chicks on the show. Can’t say I blame them. I want to keep looking at them as long as I can too, but think about it. How many hard rock bands out there have female lead singers? Could be cutting edge huh? Furthermore, I can’t believe Jill Gioia got in the bottome three last week. Obviously the people who voted against her have never seen the Trans Siberian Orchestra where she is one of the main singers. Oh my gosh, I’ve seen her live twice, and she can friggen sing!

  8. Comment from Heather on July 22nd, 2006 :

An actual rock chic here….I have to say that the only fem who stands a ghost of a chance at being taken seriously is the chich from Africa…Dilana/Dalana (can’t spell) even so….a whole bunch of tough rock dudes want to be taken seriously as a tough group and she - though tough, is still a chic. Sad but true. It’ll probably be the jasck ass with the huge forehead that makes the cut since he has presence. Just my opinion…..

  9. Comment from RockStar Video Blog on July 29th, 2006 :

Toby is my first pick, Dilana is a close second, however I doubt they will choose a girl in the end.

I miss Marty Casey from last year…

  10. Comment from carlala2k3 on August 7th, 2006 :

love the show…will be good this week because contestants will make up lirics to one of the band’s songs.

  11. Comment from Christina on August 8th, 2006 :

I too, miss Marty from last season. I seriously can’t believe that the bimbo with the dark hair who enjoys spray painting on her costumes is STILL in the competition. HOLY CRAPOLI!! Please take us out of our misery and get RID of her!! She can’t sing any better than I can (and I sound like crap). They only keep her around because she “looks” good. Well … I gaurantee that people won’t pay the price of a ticket just to look at this odd woman. She sucks. It’s time for HER TO GO!!! I don’t know if I can even stand to watch it again this week.

  12. Comment from Patricia on August 10th, 2006 :

I feel that Zayra Alvarez needs to go b/c she just doesn’t have what it takes to be a rock star. Especially the type of rock star that Super Nova is looking for.

  13. Comment from Courtney Day on August 15th, 2006 :

I reandlly think everyone should be kicked off other then the two Lucas and Dalina

  14. Comment from Patricia on August 17th, 2006 :

I feel that the group is going to have a hard choice to make if it comes down to it. They have two people that it is going to be a tight race between and those two are Magni and Dilana. They both are very good. Dilana that was an excellent performance the other night.

  15. Comment from nancy on August 23rd, 2006 :

They are down to all great performers now. It’s too bad that Patrice will probably be leaving tonight as she is very nice and talented. My pick to win is between Lucas and Dilana. I think if this band did pick a girl, she is the only one in the world who could fit the bill. She and Lucas are the only “fits” for this band. My 20 Year old son watched with me last week and he thought everyone sucked except Dilana-he ssaid he would buy her CD. Pick Dilana!!

  16. Comment from Connie Plymel on August 23rd, 2006 :

I think Storm should have been gone and Toby and Dilna should be in the last two. They are both real good

  17. Comment from Darsenbrite on August 24th, 2006 :

Dilana is aggressive and shows her desire to be #1. It seems, as if, everyone runs circles around her. They complain about her criticism toward them , but they are all doing the same thing, complaining.

  18. Comment from Richard Gozalez on August 25th, 2006 :

Dilana had our vote from the beging but after last week with the drama she put out now we have second thought Super Nova does need a mother that bitches all the time or talks about other band member behind their back

  19. Comment from tess rafanan on August 25th, 2006 :

The fight is just between Magni and Ryan, who both have the voice to draw the crowd.Magni, does not have to exert effort just to please the crowd coz he has this oozing appeal to rock every one’s heart while Ryan’s creative style in singing makes ooh and aahs to everybody.

  20. Comment from Lisa Gower alias Astrid on August 31st, 2006 :

Dilana all the way. She is the foot that fits the glass shoe. She has the look, the personality, the entire package that works for this group. To pick another would be a big, huge mistake. As you watch her perform, she is scoping the entire crowd, singing to not just one, but everybody out there. She is your star guys!! Choose Dilana and make Super Nova a group to remember for years to come.

  21. Comment from Simon Tromans on September 5th, 2006 :

Been watching the show from here in UK, blows away the cringingly lame mainstream X-Factor we’re expected to tune in to.
The Big Question - Who is the right fit for the band?
Tommy, Gilby and Jason have such established personalities, I really feel for them and the contestants, there’s this big chasm inbetween.
I mean, hoping to become the frontman for these guys, while showcasing their own abilities; Then each becoming admired in their own right - that’s not helping.
It’s why I can’t see any of them fitting in, personally. And that’s flipped what the show is really about, launching a band.
So… could Supernova witness the house band been fronted by one of the contestants?
Can’t rule that one out for sure. Well a band will have been launched, so the show will have achieved, in part, what it set out to do. Now that could help with Supernova obstacle no 2., the band with the same name. They are pissed off.
So dump the name Supernova, I mean, Frankie goes to Hollywood - Relax keeps springing to mind, anyway, not good (- Is this just a UK thing?).
It’ll also release Tommy, Gilby and Jason. Bet they didn’t foresee any pitfalls with project anyway, can concentrate on making damn fine music instead of
been involved in way boring legal turkey twangers.

And… in the meantime, hey, it’s no great hang for us. We are the audience, we are being entertained. That’s Rock.

  22. Comment from Patricia on September 6th, 2006 :

I think that Storms performance was well done last night. She did a good job on both songs. Toby did a good job on his songs especially the one that Tommy Lee snuck up from behind him. He showed that he could still continue with a song even when someone is trying to distract him which is a good thing. Magni is still going strong. Keep up the good work guys.

  23. Comment from VANESSA OLALEYE on September 7th, 2006 :

I THINK TOMMY LEE JONES IS THE HOTTEST!!!!!

  24. Comment from JOY on September 13th, 2006 :

    LUCAS SHOULD WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
