A Rock Star Supernova Review 8-1-06

This is week 5 of Rock Star: Supernova. Phil Ritchie was voted off last week.

On tonights show Canada’s own Lukas Rossi - a very talented singer who seemed to suffer from a bad song pick this week.  Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted won’t kick him off after one bad performance if he ends up in the bottom three, but in the face of a number of other performances, I’m beginning to wonder if he has what it takes.

Dana Andrews, Ryan Star, Dilana and Storm Large all proved their worth with some of the best performances we’ve seen so far.

Reviews for each of this week’s performances:

Patrice Pike - “Higher Ground”, Stevie Wonder
Whether it was thanks to Tommy Lee or not, this was one of the hardest covers done on Rock Star to date. Patrice was pretty good, and definitely energetic, but perhaps not in her best form. Her stage presence and vocals just weren’t quite there, but it was a good attempt on her part.

Josh Logan - “Santeria”, Sublime
This was actually a really good song choice for Josh - it finally shows he might be able to bridge the gap between his funky vocals and a harder, rock sound. Then again, this wasn’t really that heavy of a song, but Josh really nailed it. Great job, but he’s still got to prove it with a bit more edge.

Dilana - “Can’t Get Enough”, Bad Company
Brilliant work by Dilana. Excellent version of the song that was both energetic and slick. In my mind she’s vastly imrpoved since her first appearance on the show, and she’s cementing her place in the top three if she keeps it up.

Toby Rand - “Pennyroyal Tea”, Nirvana
Toby certainly injected his own style into this song, but I’m still not wild about his style. It’s coming off a lot more professional and honest, but I still have a feeling like it’s all rather forced. Rather too slow a version of the song too.

Zayra Alvarez - “Jenny (867-5309)”, Tommy Tutone
What an oddball this girl is. I tell ya, the outfits are just too far out there, but I will say this, I still like her versions of these songs. She injects something unique into everything she does. Not quite a Supernova-level performance though to be honest.

Magni - “Clocks”, Coldplay
Not too bad a choice for Magni, but he didn’t quite capture the vocals on the higher notes, and he just doesn’t have the range that Chris Martin brings to the song. Decent performer though, but I’m a bit surprised by Superstar’s love-in for him, but it was amazing of them to offer to fly his family in to see him now that his baby was born.

Jill Gioia - “Don’t You Forget About Me”, Simple Minds
She’s got the energy, the voice, and maybe even some of the moves, but her style kind of just doesn’t come off that well. Tommy Lee makes a great comment about how she went too far with the song, rather than selling its subtleties.

Ryan Star - “Losing My Religion”, REM
Ryan takes a real chance on this song by basically blowing it out of the water with his own style - bumping the chorus up a few nothces. It’s a gutsy cover that could have been horrible, but I think he really managed to own the song. Getting behind the piano was also brilliant, and as with last week, you could tell Ryan was totally into the song.

Lukas Rossi - “Celebrity Skin”, Hole
I never imagined a guy singing this track, but Lukas stood his ground, he just didn’t bring his usual charm to the song. In fact, I’d say it was his worst performance yet, and he really has to watch his stage presence if he wants to stick around. This could be the first week that we see Lukas landing in the bottom three.

Storm Large - “Changes”, David Bowie
Much like the charts, you have to switch things up now and then, and this was a well-timed night for a slow song from Storm. She actually gave me shivers singing Bowie’s classic, and she did a great job on stage even though she didn’t really do anything but emote. Excellent work - she’s obviously still on her way to the top three if you ask me.

Dana Andrews - “Teenage Wasteland”, The Who
Dana hasn’t been one of my favorite singers in this competition, but she really did a good job on this song. One of her best performances, and a good way of showing that she’s can tackle some big songs.
Who will face the bottom three this week? More than likely Zayra and Jill again, and maybe even Patrice again, but otherwise I’m thinking Toby or Lukas might make an appearance. My hope is that Jill or Toby will get booted off after tomorrow night’s show, but more than likely it will be Zayra, who just doesn’t seem to fit the style viewers, and the band, really want.

FINAL PICKS
Elimination: Zayra Alvarez, Lukas Rossi, Jill Gioia
Favorites: Ryan Star, Dilana, Storm Large
Dark Horse: Dana Andrews
