Lukas Rossi Ready to Rock

Rock Star Supernova’s Lukas Rossi doesn’t appear to have lost any of the energy that helped him win his new supergroup’s front man role.

The 29-year-old Canadian was hyped when performing in front of his three potential band mates and millions of television viewers, and has now been thrown into the role of touring the world promoting the band’s new album and upcoming tour.

The album is out next week and the tour includes six shows in Australia and New Zealand next year.

The promotion’s something that can become nothing more than a necessary grind for some, but it’s all new for Rossi.

“It’s crazy. . . I used to go to the corner store and think that was far enough. Now I’m going to Australia and New Zealand. . . ” he said during a two-day stop off in Auckland that ended yesterday.

Rossi said he was still reeling from the instant fame that came with winning the Rock Star Supernova audition , which was screened as a television series in countries all around the globe.

“I’m still trying to catch my breath,” he said.

“It’s been a whirlwind of really cool things. We’ve really just been getting the record done and did a lot of radio.

“I’m really excited about the record, it sounds unbelievable.”

Rossi has some old-school heavyweight rockers behind him in former Motley Crue drummer Tommi Lee, former Guns ‘n’Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead.

Newstead, however, will miss the band’s inaugural tour after he tried to catch a bass-head that fell off a speaker stack and did serious damage to his shoulder joint.

“He’s out of the tour unfortunately, but thank God we auditioned for bass players and acquired Johnny Colt from the Black Crowes,” Rossi said. “He is a powerhouse bass player.”

Some of the tracks on the band’s album will be familiar to those who follo wed the TV series and Rossi has also played a big part in ot her tracks, which will no doubt suit the stadiums they will be blasted out in.

His bandmates have praised his lyric-writing and vocal ability and a couple of ballads among the rock songs give the album some diversity.

While the band had an explosive creation courtesy of reality TV, Rossi said he was staying humble and that there was no question the band would continue to leave its mark on the music industry when the tour is over.

“I’m just a grounded guy dude, I don’t really let all the media stuff get to me. . . it’s part of the game but it’s not what I’m here for.

“I’m here to write records and there are going to be many records to come from Supernova – that’s all I’m worried about.”

He said the band’s attitude had rubbed off on him and their experience had fine-tuned his singing.

“They’re amazing, considering the amount of success they’ve had they’ve managed to stay grounded and they welcomed me like a brother to the band.”

Rossi said that right from the start there was a dynamic that was missing from previous bands he was a part of in his native Toronto.

“Absolutely, right from the get go when they chose me, from that first song we played together it felt like a band.”

“You can play as hard and as loud as you want, but toning it down, even the volume is at 12, is the hardest thing to do and I’ve definitely learned to do that over the years – but even more so with my boys.”

Performances to date have been limited to Internet broadcasts but Rossi will no doubt feel the gravity of his rise to stardom when he steps on stage with Rock Star Supernova for their live New Year’s debut in Las Vegas.

Fans will be lining up when they get to New Zealand a few months later and Rossi promises they won’t be disappointed.

“It’s going to rock.”

The Rock Star Supernova album is released on November 20.

Tour dates: March 21, Westpac Centre, Christchurch; March 23, TSB Arena, Wellington; March 24, Vector Arena, Auckland.
