Spotting Rock Star Supernova Tommy Lee

Flanked by his Supernova bandmate Lukas Rossi and an entourage of publicists and managers, Tommy Lee swaggers in covered in tattoos and jewellery.

A few minutes later we’re ushered up to their hotel room to do the interview.

And the biggest surprise of all is that Lee is … well … nice. He’s also very, very skinny - like the male answer to the size zero trend.

Lee and Rossi have jetted into Auckland for a two-day visit to talk about their shows with Rock Star Supernova.

Despite warnings of taboo interview subjects - ex-wife Pamela Anderson and her ex-husband Kid Rock - and told he doesn’t much like being photographed, Lee is courteous, polite and friendly.

It might help that, like Rossi, he’s got a beer in one hand and a cigarette int he other - and it’s only jsut midday on a Tuesday.

But they are rock ‘n’ roll stars.

Rock Star Supernova hit the road in January and it seems age hasn’t slowed down Lee, who’s now 44.

“We’ve been having a blast,” Lee says. “Probably too much fun.”

Ropssi scotches any notion that Lee is a bit long in the tooth for rock ‘n’ roll antics.

“Like wine, it gets better with age, bro’,” he says.

Lee has famously told all about his wild-child existence while on the road with rock band Motley Crue in the 1980s.

And excerpt from his book The Dirt says a typical day would be waking up at 5pm to do a phone interview, throwing up on the floor before taking more drugs and alcohol and doing a show, finally passing out at 9am.

I ask him if life on the road with Supernova is that crazy, citing the throwing up example.

“Yeah,” he laughs. “I don’t think there’s any sort of comparison, they are two different animals,” he says of the two rock bands.

“We are having as much or more fun than Motley. It’s different animals. A couple of guys were married at different times (in Motley) and we’re single,” he says about himself and Lukas.

Aha, so those rumours that he adn Pamela are back together aren’t true then.

Lee is very much a single man.

He and Rossi certainly act like single boys having fun. At one point Lukas interrupts the interview to show Tommy a girl in the porn magazine he’s “reading” at the table, which is littered with ashtrays full of cigarette butts.

Despite all his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, it’s clear Lee has a softer side when it comes to his boys.

The rocker immediately lights up when he talks about his kids - and it’s obvious he’s a doting dad.

And it seems his sons with Pamela Anderson - Brandon, 10 and Dyland, nine - are inheriting his way with the ladies.

“They are almost kind of into girls, not quite yet,” he says. “My youngest boy’s like ‘Girls - ewww!”

“I’m like, ‘You won’t be saying that in a couple of years time.’”
